Good catch - a unique Rider!
Guitar trouble, certainly - an amp went out or a string broke, something like that. That kind of thing happened frequently in the early days.
You'll notice that Jerry sounds very distracted in the second verse, and that's when he stops playing after a few misplaced notes. The others recover nicely - and it's neat how he sneaks his way back into the second solo, though still sounding somewhat lost...
If you listen to the audience tape, the crowd goes wild when Phil & Bob sing the second verse themselves - and they start cheering when Jerry starts playing again; so that's further evidence that Jerry was having guitar trouble.
My guess is a string broke during the bridge, since Jerry doesn't play any high notes in the first verse.

If that's too mundane an explanation though, perhaps Pigpen drunkenly fell off his bench and Jerry had to go help him up?
Or perhaps some rider beckoned Jerry off mid-song for a quick one...

Are there other later Riders where Weir sings the headlight verse?

Not too mundane - I figured it was something along those lines, nothing spectacular. But just didn't know if anyone who was there remembered how the scene went down. Thank you for the response?

Bob may have intended to sing the headlight verse on this night, but he messed it up a bit and the results are one of the funnier lyrics you'll hear.

Hahaha! Bob wishes he was a headlight in his back door some day!

Very interesting ... I always wished they'd mixed things up like this more in the 80's
